We are looking for a junior researcher contributing to the analysis of international climate policy, mostly at the scale of major emitting countries. The activities are part of the ELEVATE project funded under the Horizon Europe research programme.

As our new colleague you will play a role in providing policy and scenario analysis focused at mitigation action to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement and tracking climate action and progress towards targets at the national level. The analysis is done using the IMAGE modelling framework, with a focus on the energy system. The research also consists of analyzing and comparing the results of mitigation scenarios from IMAGE and other model teams. Therefore, you are also expected to collaborate with research teams and researchers from Europe and countries worldwide.

You will become part of our IMAGE research team. The IMAGE model is a key instrument of the PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency for scenario analysis of global environmental change and climate change in relation to human development (https://www.pbl.nl/en/image). The energy model of IMAGE simulates the global energy system at the level of 26 world regions and countries and explores mitigation scenarios to prevent climate change. Its results are frequently used in international assessments such as those by IPCC.

We are looking for a colleague who enjoys working in a team and has strong analytical skills. Preferably you have experience in using models to explore research questions related to climate change. In particular, you will contribute to scenario studies and energy analysis, and you will be encouraged to publish in scientific publications.

  • you have an MSc in energy analysis, climate policy, environmental sciences or economics, or a related study in the natural sciences, with a proven affinity with climate change and energy;
  • you have a demonstrable quantitative understanding of climate policy and are interested in the development of climate policy in the context of the Paris Agreement;
  • you are familiar with the energy system and mitigation of greenhouse gases;
  • you have experience applying models and developing model code (ideally Python);
  • you have experience with quantitative analysis and strong analytical skills, and you are fast and flexible in becoming familiar with new skills;
  • you are skilled in communicating your findings through presentations, policy studies and articles, have excellent English language skills, and can represent the IMAGE team in an international setting;
  • you have experience conducting your own work and function well as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Salarisniveau schaal 10
  • Maandsalaris Min €3.045 Max. €4.848 (bruto)
  • Dienstverband Arbeidsovereenkomst voor bepaalde tijd
  • Contractduur 5 jaar
  • Minimaal aantal uren per week 32
  • Maximaal aantal uren per week 36

In addition to your salary, you will receive an Individual Budget (IKB). The IKB consists of funds (16.37% of your gross annual salary) and time. With the IKB, you make choices that are right for you, and you can decide on some of your employment conditions yourself. For example, you could opt to receive part of your monthly salary at a date of your choosing. You could also use the budget to purchase additional leave, or vice versa, or spend it on tax-efficient purchases. The Government of the Netherlands strongly values personal growth and career development and offers a wide range of options to achieve that. The fringe benefits include various study facilities, company fitness, a full compensation of your public transport expenses for your commute and partially paid parental leave.

A good landing in the organisation is very important to us. In your introduction period, a direct colleague will be your first point of contact in the period in which you get acquainted with the organization, next to your manager. PBL has an introduction programme for new employees which focuses on the role and position of the agency, our working methods and the work culture.

Note that a basic understanding of Dutch language will be required and if necessary, you will be offered training to acquire this.
