Would you like to contribute to creating a circular materials system? A circular economy in 2050 is one of the most important sustainability goals of the European Union and the Dutch government. The urgency of the Paris Agreement climate goals has boosted the attention for circular solutions.

In this project, you are solving the puzzle of how to fit a product into a circular materials system. You have to cover all the possible strategies and use knowledge from all kinds of disciplines. Worldwide, numerous circular initiatives, pilots and research projects have been launched, and it is your task to select the most relevant ones for the Netherlands.

COIN is the Circular Options Inventory Network, a partnership of PBL with Leiden institute of Environmental Sciences (CML), Utrecht Copernicus institute, TU Delft and TNO. COIN aims to be the knowledge exchange platform for circularity for Dutch industry, trade and professional users. It will be used to facilitate the circular economy execution programs of the Dutch government. COIN aims to cover the full field of product categories, actors and circular strategies. COIN aims to be more comprehensive than other knowledge sources, and will be acknowledged as the shared source for industry, government, user groups, technology suppliers and consultants.

You will be intensively trained to select, analyse and derive future circular pathways for specific product categories used in the Netherlands. You will directly consult, under guidance, both companies and experts from TNO, PBL and universities on circular options and strategies. Your scope will include options for circular technologies, materials substitution, economic factors, environmental impact reductions and customer behaviour. Specific policy analysis is not included.

You will work in a team of COIN students and researchers, but individually contribute to COIN by examining a specific product category. This will result in a standardised publication. The fixed duration of the COIN internship is six months. During your internship you cooperate closely with supervisors from your university (postdoc level) and TNO/PBL experts on a 85% (you) 15% (cooperation and guidance) basis. Moreover, you will cooperate and exchange experiences with other COIN interns and share training and evaluation sessions. After successful completion of the product study you will receive a certificate of ‘COIN expert’ and have access to COIN events.

The internship (typically 6 months) is suitable for a master thesis or master graduation research project, as it will have a strong research component. You will be based at PBL (The Hague), TNO (Utrecht or Amsterdam) or at one of the universities but may have to travel across the Netherlands for data collection. The general internship remuneration and conditions of PBL and TNO apply to the internship. In case you want to do a COIN study as part of a master thesis at your university, please refer to the contacts below. You will possibly have to sign a confidentiality agreement. We are open for applications starting April/May 2022, later starting dates are possible.
