Functieomschrijving
Increasingly intricate trade networks spanning our globe allow consumption in one part of the world to cause biodiversity and ecosystem services impacts elsewhere. Unfortunately, we have limited and incomplete tools for assessing the impacts of global supply chains on biodiversity and ecosystem services, which hampers identifying options for mitigating these impacts for policymakers, retailers and other stakeholders.
The Horizon Europe project BAMBOO (Biodiversity and trade: mitigating the impacts of non-food biomass global supply chains) aims at addressing this by 1) developing and applying impact assessment methods to quantify the impacts of global supply chains on biodiversity and ecosystem services, and 2) identifying potential leverage points for halting and reversing biodiversity loss now and under future scenarios.
Within the BAMBOO project, PBL is looking for a junior researcher to 1) contribute to the development and application of quantitative and spatially explicit models for assessing multiple ecosystem services, as part of the GLOBIO-ES modelling framework, and 2) contribute to the development of an impact assessment method for ecosystem services to be linked to Life Cycle Assessment and Input-Output models.
Functie-eisen
We are looking for a motivated junior researcher with the following characteristics:
- You hold an MSc degree in a relevant discipline (a.o. industrial ecology, environmental biology, environmental science) with a clear focus on quantitative modelling approaches.
- You have proven affinity with spatially explicit environmental modelling, preferably including the modelling of ecosystem services.
- You have affinity and/or interest in life cycle assessment and/or input-output modelling.
- You are familiar with open-source programming languages commonly used in environmental research (notably R and/or Python) and you have experience with GIS software.
- You have a drive for policy-relevant scientific research that contributes to solving environmental issues and sustainability challenges.
- You have the capacity to deliver on your tasks and deliverables and respond in a timely manner to deadlines.
- You have great communication skills (both written and spoken).
- Dutch is the working language at PBL. English is spoken in international project teams. Therefore, you are expected to be fluent in English (written and spoken). A basic level of Dutch (mainly spoken) is appreciated.
Are you missing some of the job requirements, but would you like to work at PBL? Motivate why you think you are a good fit in our organization, and who knows, you might become our new colleague!
