Functieomschrijving

Global trends in human population and the economy are expected to increase demands for water, energy and food worldwide. Combined with the ongoing climate change, these increasing demands challenge the sustainable and equitable use of natural resources and threaten biodiversity. A better understanding of the connections and feedbacks in the nexus of water, energy, food and biodiversity over multiple spatio-temporal scales and across institutional borders is key for adapting to the sustainability challenges. The European H2020 project GoNEXUS aims to develop a framework for designing and assessing innovative solutions for efficient, sustainable and coordinated governance of the water-energy-food-biodiversity nexus.

As part of the GoNEXUS project, we are looking for a junior researcher to further develop and apply the global biodiversity model GLOBIO-Aquatic. GLOBIO-Aquatic is part of the GLOBIO modelling framework (www.globio.info), which is designed to assess the impacts of human pressures and environmental policy on biodiversity and ecosystems worldwide. In GoNEXUS, we will improve GLOBIO-Aquatic so it better represents the effects of dams, water temperature, and runoff changes on freshwater ecosystem integrity and fish species diversity. We will then link the improved GLOBIO-Aquatic model to global models that capture other relevant elements of the water-energy-food-biodiversity nexus and we will use the connected models to evaluate policy and solution scenarios.

To strengthen the GoNEXUS team, we are looking for a junior researcher in ecology or environmental science with proven expertise and interest in large-scale environmental modelling and a drive for multidisciplinary sustainability assessments. We offer a three year position in which you will contribute to the further development of GLOBIO-Aquatic and its application in the GoNEXUS scenarios. You will share the results of your work through presentations and scientific articles.

  • You are familiar with open-source programming languages commonly used in environmental research (notably R and Python).
