Functieomschrijving

Protected areas (nature reserves, national parks) are the cornerstone of biodiversity conservation. As part of the EU 2030 Biodiversity Strategy, a trans-European nature network (TEN-N) will be developed, which should enhance the coherence of the existing network of Natura 2000 sites and other nationally designated protected areas. The TEN-N should generate a functionally connected network of green infrastructure, including in cities and other intensively managed systems, that allows for the migration and exchange of plants and animals and maintains healthy ecosystems and their associated ecosystem services (benefits to people).

The Horizon Europe project NaturaConnect aims to generate knowledge, tools and capacity to support EU Member States in realizing the TEN-N. As part of the project, NaturaConnect partners will develop and apply spatially explicit models for quantifying the responses of biodiversity and ecosystem services across Europe to changes in the configuration and management of the TEN-N.

Within the NaturaConnect project, PBL is looking for a junior researcher to 1) map opportunities and constraints for the development of the TEN-N based on relevant socio-economic and land-use variables, and 2) contribute to the development and application quantitative and spatially explicit models for assessing multiple ecosystem services provided by green infrastructure. For the second component, you will assess the societal demand for certain ecosystem services (e.g., based on policy guidelines and people’s requirements) and develop and improve biophysical models capable of quantifying ecosystem service supply, building upon PBL’s GLOBIO-ES model framework. Finally, you will contribute to the evaluation of ecosystem service supply relative to the demands for different possible realizations of the TEN-N.
