Functieomschrijving
Wetlands are of great ecological and economic importance. They are biodiversity hotspots and play a major role in global carbon budgets. Despite this, wetlands are disappearing or deteriorating at an alarming rate. For example, only 20% of the wetland area in Europe is in good ecological condition. Wetland restoration is considered a key approach for counteracting and reversing the loss and degradation of these ecosystems. However, restoration is not yet routinely incorporated in environmental policy and action plans, as policy makers have insufficient knowledge and understanding of wetlands’ importance and restoration benefits.
The Horizon Europe project WET HORIZONS aims to improve crucial wetland knowledge and develop sound workable tools and approaches for supporting large-scale restoration action in Europe. Within WET HORIZONS, we are looking for a junior researcher who will contribute to the further development and application of the European biodiversity model BioScore. BioScore is developed to assess the impacts of human pressures and environmental policy on terrestrial biodiversity and ecosystems in Europe. In this project we will extend and improve BioScore such that it can assess the biodiversity of pristine, degraded and restored wetlands and peatlands. We will apply the improved model to evaluate possible management strategies under alternative future socio-economic scenarios.
To strengthen our team, we are looking for a junior researcher with a background in ecology or environmental science and with proven expertise and interest in large-scale environmental and ecological modelling. We offer a three year position in which you will contribute to the further development of BioScore and its application in WET HORIZONS. You will share the results of your work through presentations and scientific articles.
