Functieomschrijving

We look for a researcher to contribute to the research of the IMAGE team in model-based scenario analysis of future land use and land management. The IMAGE model is a key instrument of PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency for scenario analyses of global environmental change in relation to the future development of consumption and production of energy and food (https://www.pbl.nl/en/image). The model assesses trend scenarios and explores response options to prevent climate change or achieve other sustainable development goals. Results are frequently used in international assessments such as those by IPCC and IPBES.

This position specifically focuses on the contribution of the IMAGE model in two recently granted Horizon Europe projects: The LAMASUS project focuses on sustainable land use and management, and the BrightSpace project focuses on agricultural transition pathways within planetary boundaries. A key task in this position is the implementation and further development of the agro-economic and land-use modelling in the IMAGE framework. IMAGE combines the computable general equilibrium model MAGNET from WUR with high-resolution land-use modelling. In addition, we explore spatial explicit partial equilibrium modelling with SIMPLE-G. The candidate is expected to further develop these model tools to better represent sustainable agricultural practices such as organic farming, reduced pesticide use, and limits to intensification. In addition, the candidate will apply the modelling toolbox to develop agricultural transition scenarios. This work will be performed in close collaboration with colleagues from Wageningen Economic Research and other partners in the Horizon Europe projects.

The candidate has strong analytical skills and enjoys working in a team. Ideally, the candidate has experience with agro-economic modelling in the context of global environmental change research. Specifically, the researcher will contribute to model development and scenario studies resulting in project deliverables and scientific publications. You will cooperate with other IMAGE model team researchers, working on land use, energy and biodiversity and other related topics.

The Department of Climate, Air and Energy (KLE) analyses the effects of climate change, air pollution and energy issues on society. Looking at every scale — national, European and global — it carries out assessments of policies, both proposed and already in place, on how to mitigate and adapt to climate change, combat air pollution, and realize a sustainable energy supply. It also studies scientific, economic and governance aspects of societal developments. This work is often based on integral quantitative analyses using various calculation models and a systems approach.
