Functieomschrijving
We look for a researcher to contribute to the research of the IMAGE team in model-based scenario analysis of future forestry systems and the supply of biomass for timber products, bioenergy, and the bio-based economy. The IMAGE model is a key instrument of PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency for scenario analyses of global environmental change in relation to the future development of consumption and production of energy and food (https://www.pbl.nl/en/image/home). The model assesses trend scenarios and explores response options to prevent climate change or achieve other sustainable development goals. Results are frequently used in international assessments such as those by IPCC and IPBES.
This position specifically focuses on the contribution of the IMAGE model in two recently granted Horizon Europe projects: The ForestPaths project focuses on sustainable forestry production systems, and the BAMBOO project focuses on sustainable biomass use in energy and material sectors. A key task in this position is the improved modelling of biomass supply from the forestry and agricultural sectors using the coupled IMAGE-land and LPJmL models. This involves working with the dynamic global vegetation model LPJmL for projections of forest growth, and further improving existing modules in IMAGE-land on the forestry and bioenergy production systems. In addition, demand for biomass will be improved based on the building, paper and energy sectors represented in the IMAGE-energy model. The candidate is also expected to connect scenario output to projective lifecycle analysis of biomass and timber production considering greenhouse gas emissions, land use and biodiversity. This task will be performed in close cooperation with partners in the ForestPaths and BAMBOO projects and colleagues from the biodiversity modelling team at PBL (GLOBIO model: https://www.globio.info/).
The candidate has strong analytical skills and enjoys working in a team. Ideally, the candidate has experience with dynamic vegetation models and/or simulation models in global change research. Specifically, the researcher will contribute to model development, scenario and LCA studies, resulting in project deliverables and scientific publications.
