Global biodiversity is currently declining at an alarming rate. At PBL, we aim to support international biodiversity-relevant policy processes through scenario analyses with our global biodiversity model GLOBIO. We are currently looking for a motivated quantitative ecologist or environmental scientist to join the GLOBIO team.

To strengthen the GLOBIO team, we are looking for a candidate with a strong background in statistics and ecological modelling. GLOBIO is a global model to assess large-scale impacts of human changes in the environment (e.g., climate change, land use, pollution) on terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems (including biodiversity and ecosystem services). GLOBIO is also part of PBL's IMAGE framework: a comprehensive integrated modelling framework of interacting human and natural systems. GLOBIO is increasingly used in integrated assessments that include trade-offs and co-benefits between nature, nature’s contributions to people (ecosystem services) and other sustainable development goals.

In this position you will contribute to the further development and application of the global biodiversity model GLOBIO. This includes the following tasks:

  • Improve GLOBIO by developing and updating quantitative relationships between biodiversity, ecosystem services and various environmental pressures (e.g., climate change, land use, pollution).
  • Apply GLOBIO in scenario simulations to inform biodiversity-relevant policy processes (e.g., via CBD, IPBES).
  • Translate applied questions to needs and actions for further model development (e.g., representation of pressures, feedbacks from nature to society), in collaboration with the IMAGE team.
  • Collaborate with (inter)national research institutes in biodiversity assessments and coordinate and supervise targeted projects outsourced to external partners.
  • Contribute to the technical implementation of novel model components.
  • Contribute to the management of the GLOBIO project, with prospect of project leadership.

  • You hold a PhD degree in ecology, environmental science, or a related relevant field.
  • You have proven expertise in developing and applying quantitative ecological models (statistical and/or process-based) and in managing and analysing large datasets.
  • You are familiar with common high-level programming languages (e.g. R, Python, Matlab).
  • You have affinity with policy-relevant and applied research that contributes to solving environmental issues and can position your research in a broader sustainability context.
  • You enjoy working in (external scientific and policy-oriented) teams and are not afraid to take the lead if needed.
  • You are fluent in English (written and spoken) and you master at least a basic level of Dutch (mainly spoken) or you are willing to learn so.

Overige arbeidsvoorwaarden

In addition to your salary, you will receive an Individual Budget (IKB). The IKB consists of funds (16.37% of your gross annual salary) and time. With the IKB, you make choices that are right for you, and you can decide on some of your employment conditions yourself. For example, you could opt to receive part of your monthly salary at a date of your choosing. You could also use the budget to purchase additional leave, or vice versa, or spend it on tax-efficient purchases. The Government of the Netherlands strongly values personal growth and career development and offers a wide range of options to achieve that. The fringe benefits include various study facilities, company fitness, a full compensation of your public transport expenses for your commute and partially paid parental leave.

Meer over jouw toekomstige afdeling

The Department of Nature and Rural Areas (NLG) focuses on policy-relevant questions and issues related to nature and landscape quality. The department analyses potential policy solutions to halt or reverse degradation of nature from local to global scales, thereby accounting for possible trade-offs with other aspects of environmental quality and sustainability. Integrated landscape-level analyses are an important area of research: which landscape elements (cultural heritage) need to be preserved and how can we optimize landscape configuration? Patterns, trends, bottlenecks and solutions are explored in terrestrial as well as aquatic systems.
