Functieomschrijving

PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency in The Hague is looking for a highly motivated researcher contributing to the application and development of IMAGE’s energy system.

The IMAGE model is a key instrument of PBL for scenario analyses of global environmental change in relation to future development of consumption and production of food and energy. Regarding energy, model research focuses on possible development of energy demand and supply in relation to climate change, development and air pollution. The model assesses the development of scenarios without climate policy, but mostly focuses on mitigation strategies consistent with the Paris Agreement as well as the impact of existing policies.

As a researcher you will specifically be involved in scenario analysis with a focus on the representation of energy demand. For this you will work together with other researchers of the IMAGE model team, and with partners at Utrecht University. You will participate in two European projects (NAVIGATE and ENGAGE). You are expected to (co-)publish your work both in PBL reports and peer reviewed journals.

Functie-eisen

  • You have an MSc in energy system analysis, environmental sciences or a related study.
  • You have strong analytical skills and you are fast and flexible in becoming familiar with new skills.
  • You have experience with analysing large, often spatially explicit, datasets.
  • You are able to read and modify model code (ideally Python) and you are familiar (or willing to become familiar) with integrated assessment and economic modelling.
  • You are conversant with the energy system and climate change, and you have a demonstrable quantitative understanding of these issues at the global scale.
  • The position demands good writing skills in English and requires that you publish, on modelling the global agriculture, food and environment system.
  • You have experience with conducting your own research, but you also work well as part of a team.

In addition to the salary, you receive a so-called individual choice budget (ICB). The ICB consists of funds (16.37% of your gross annual salary) and time. You can use the ICB to make the choices that suit your preferences and you can decide on some of your employment conditions yourself. For example, you can opt to have part of your monthly income paid out at a date of your choosing. You can also convert this budget into leave — and the other way round — or spend it on tax-friendly causes. The Government of the Netherlands strongly values personal growth and career development and offers numerous opportunities to achieve this. The fringe benefits include various study facilities, company fitness training, full reimbursement of your costs of commuting by public transport, and partially paid parental leave.

Meer over jouw toekomstige afdeling

The department of Climate, Air and Energy (KLE) analyses the effects of climate change, air pollution and energy issues on society. Looking at every scale — national, European and global — it carries out assessments of policies, both proposed and already in place, on how to mitigate and adapt to climate change, combat air pollution, and realise a sustainable energy supply. It also studies scientific, economic and governance aspects of societal developments. This work is often based on integral quantitative analyses using various calculation models and a systems approach.
